I get the following error when using the log viewer and clicking on Clear Log. Logged in as Host.

InnerException: The log file for database 'db name' is full. Back up the transaction log for the database to free up some log space.

What should I do? I'm using 4.4.1 in a shared hosted environment with a 25Mb SQL 2000 db. I can access the db remotely with MS SQL Server Mgt Studio Express, which says there's over 9Mb of free space in it.

Jeff,

The DB has two files, the datafiles (.mdf) and the transaction logs (.trn). Generally the log files balloon the fastest because they record every action that takes place in the DB. A good habit is to back them up on a regular basis, the time can vary based on your needs.

For now to get you back online use these two commands:

- BACKUP LOG <db name> WITH TRUNCATE_ONLY

-  USE <db name>;

   GO

   DBCC SHRINKFILE (<db name>, 5);

   GO

This will take the log file down to 5Mb.

Many thanks CJ. As it happens, I came across this thread and was able to clear the log - a bit drastic, but it worked.

Your method however looks far more elegant, so I'll keep a bookmark of it for future use.
