We are a web hosting/email/ecommerce/advertisement company.  We have a DNN install that has made its way from version 1 to 4.3.7 and has over 100 active portals.  We are running 1 server with IIS 6.0 and SQL Server 2000 on a Windows Server 2003 Std SP1.  We have a dual Xeon with 4 GB of RAM.

The point of this post is not to toot our own horn or solicite more business but rather find out if there are any other companies out there doing the same.  We seem to run into issues that only occur with our situation and I beleive that issue is due to the size of our installation.  We run into "out of memory" issues, precompilation issues on modules, and other various problems.

I propose that we start a group here of large dnn install companies so that we can share best practices, solutions to errors that we only seem to run into, and any other issues we may run up against.  If this sounds like something that would be useful to you and your company, please reply to this message or contact us at support@spencehackney.com

We do our fair share of DNN hosting for our customers with some high-traffic sites. While we are not a hosting company per se, we do it more as a valued-added offering for our customers. I would love to collaborate and share best practices. Our sites usually run pretty smoothly, but one of our recent big problems has centered around SQL maintenance plans not running because of round-the-clock traffic.

Anyway, how do you propose we proceed? Keep adding to this thread? Sould we set up a separate portal/forum?

What a coincidence!  I was just looking at your workflow product that came out on Snowcovered.  Nice work there.  That is something that has been sorely needed in the community for quite a while.  We have actually missed out on two projects, one for Campbell University, becuase workflow was missing from the DNN core.  I expect that you will do rather well with it.

Lets just keep letting people post to this thread if they are interested in joining the conversation.  In the meantime I will try to grab a domain and set up a simple informational portal.  However, I am heistant to take the conversation to another site becuase I would like it to be available to the larger DNN community.  If we get enough interest I will see what I can do about getting us a seperate forum.  Thanks for the interest!

This is precisely the direction I'm moving in so I'll add myself to the thread.

I've currently only got 15 portals on my instance, which runs on a 512Mb VPS, but I plan on increasing this dramatically very soon. I've also been getting out of memory problems but only since moving to the VPS from a shared account. I've been expecting to be able to run amost any number of portals on the instance so long as they're all in the same application pool, but perhaps there are other issues I'm unaware of that will arise. I'd have thought 4Gb was more than enough.

I'm suspicious of certain modules and have read occasionialy about modules here and there causing memory leaks and bringing servers down. I'm interesting in knowing the best way to manage and track down suspect modules.

Regards,
Rob

I think that starting a new forum here for large installs/hosting is a great idea. I am currently hosting only 7 DNN web sites but expect that number to grow. Though I am not experiencing any issues at the moment occasionally things crop up that are related to hosting multiple sites. Count me in!
