I had a problem with Windows XP roaming profiles on our network. They suddenly stopped. After three days of research this patch was the key: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/912817/

(note there is also a version 14 hotfix, google it)

Why am I posting this here...?

Well after installing this, not only did it fix the bug, but systems speeded right up and became more responsive., including my own home PC (which does not have roaming profiles.)

Just thought I'd spread this around in case people don't know about it. Also I'm not saying it will work for you, it might crash your system for I know, so don't blame me :). Installed it on 3 systems though and no problems.

I believe there is server 2003 version, and possibly other OS's. This is a COM+ update and therefore you will probably need to research what software uses this, and test it.

Just goes to show, it's time we had all Windows XP SP3... (sorry not convinced with Vista, that is SOOO next year :). No I'm not even debating it.

Those mad enough to install it, please let me know what you think.... otherwise ignore.

That is interesting.  I posted a message on 3/13 because all of a sudden both my desktop and my tablet started working extremely fast.  Something really noticeable, specially when running DNN locally.  See the following post, but no one answered: http://www.dotnetnuke.com/DotNetNukeProjects/ModuleContacts/Forums/tabid/927/forumid/111/threadid/115088/scope/posts/Default.aspx.

I think that in my case it must have been an automatic update.

And I agree with you on Vista, I'm not upgrading any of my machines to it but will consider it on new hardware.

Weirdly enough, the patch isn't an automatic update (via WSUS). You have to install it yourself. If you don't know, you don't know :)

Does anybody know if Service Pack 2 for Windows Server 2003 fixes these issues?

I found this Availability of Windows Server 2003 Post-Service Pack 1 COM+ 1.5 Hotfix Rollup Package 8 and will install this hotfix at once.

I run Win Server 2003 R2 Enterprice Edition. The SP1 for Win Server 2003 doesn't match R2 Enterprice version, so I don't think I have this hot fix installed

Thanks / Tomas
