My friend was wondering how effective this platform would be for his RC plane club.  I don't want to reinvent the wheel, so I was looking for an example site somewhere. It might double as their business solution to keep track of simple things like dues paid.

Functionality desired:
-Info/splash page
-news page
-membership with profiles where users can upload a few pics. essentially each member gets a bio page
-email list broadcast
-forums would be a bonus, but not required

I am familiar with vb.net, so some customization wouldn't be out of the question.

I don't know any off the top of my head, but for your "membership" requirement, you could check into smartthinker user profiles (http://www.smart-thinker.com/Home/tabid/1/Default.aspx); email lists can be done with various types of newsletter modules out there, forums are built-in but you might consider the ActiveForums as an alternative; splash page is a portal setting, so easy enough to accomplish, news page could easily be added (there are some really neat news modules out there where you can schedule news events to show in a period of time and to specific users/roles).

That was probably not that helpful of a post.

I run a development website and a product website for a community of simmers (for Operation Flashpoint/Armed Assault) for about 2 years now.

For my development/community website (http://www.sinewsofwar.com), I have found DNN to be truly disappointing so far. Their product is coming along great, but I find my website is often lagging behind technology in terms of features and performance from the others. Their forums are better, their galleries are better, even their news areas seem faster. I don't know if it is just me, but it seems that I often have to pay $$$ for modules which promise the same features as their free ones and often find out they are full of bugs and ultimately don't work the same. I get alot of feedback that something is "weird" to my users. I don't always know what that means, but I know traffic on my site is far less than others. So I am often taking many many hours to fix things and constantly revamping my site as I wait frustratingly for the next module update. I write application software in C# but web-based software makes me cringe with all that post-back and other stuff... else I would possibly build all my own modules. I am teetering on the edge of giving up.

On my product page (http://www.jadegear.com), I am finding it is adequate. It's like DNN is good for business sites where there may be traffic, but not alot of content *from* the users.

Bottom line, this is the best thing for an ASP.NET based site, but it is far behind many others using other platforms.
