I'm new to DNN and keen to start producing websites. I have already created several using HTML, Sitebuilders or a combination of both and am familiar with CSS etc. Normally, I would start creating a website on a staging server and would not require the domain name of the eventual site owner. When the site is ready for use, I would redirect the DNS to the website location and away we'd go. Does the same system apply to DNN? Should I look for a paid hosting service, install DNN, create and experiment and, when all is ready, make it go live under the correct Domain? I do not have my own webserver and don't want to get into creating sites on my own equipment but am happy to pay for basic hosting.

I'd appreciate the help of a "buddy" who has a high tolerance threshold for dumb questions so that I can start migrating some of my existing sites to DNN versions.

Yes you could setup a DNN installation and get a site up and going, then point the DNS to it at a later time to "go live" I have done this multiple times myself.  You just have to be sure that you have the "portal aliases" setup correctly to direct the users to the correct locations.

If you have questions about the setup feel free to e-mail me or post in my forum at http://www.mitchelsellers.com

The forums here are also a great resource!
