I'm considering a move from shared hosting to a VPS enviroment. I was wondering is anyone had any recommendations for a host to manage this with that will not cost me an arm and a leg, will provide good service and reliablity while giving me full control over my VPS so I can install apps and do pretty much what I please as an administrator over my VPS.

Well I can tell you that getting 1) good service and 2) reliability with 3) not costing an arm and a leg might be difficult.

Right now I have a virtual dedicated server with Go Daddy that does not cost an arm and a leg (under $40/month)

I have full control - which is nice, the server specs are pretty minimal, but enough to get the job done, and i have definitely had a few problems with reliability (seems to have levelled off though recently...)

And notably - because you have full control over your server and it does not come with much "set up" or "pre-installed" -- they really shy away from giving you any support....unless you pay extra for Plesk...which i have not done.

Very much worth it for casual/personal sites, but probably not the *best* bet for sites where reliability is a the #1 priority.

hope that helps,

Ian

I would personally consider RackSpace (at www.rackspace.com).  I don't host with them since I have my own server but I was fortunate to be invited and take a tour of their facilities in Reston, VA as part of a .Net conference taking place in the area.  They have an incredible setup with everything 3 and 4 times redundant.  They are not going to be the cheapest but if you want a serious provider then they are it.

I am not affiliated with Rackspace in any way but have no problem at all recommending them, I am 100% certain that if you go with them you will be satisfied.

Yes I know what I want is going to be difficult to find, which is why I asked. I had already looked at GoDaddy, but all their plans only seem to offer a Linux OS. Am I missing something or is there a Windows version too. I proabyl shold have mentioned this is to run .Net sites so I need Windows and SQL server as options.

Thanks Bruce

Here is the link to the "build your own virtual dedicated server" page:

https://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/hosting/virtual.asp?app%5Fhdr=&display=virtual&byos=1&ci=5748

Also FYI - very little (if anything) comes pre-installed so you'll have to supply SQL Server.

As far as Rackspace goes - the only thing that kept me from it when making my purchase was the price. It just didn't make sense for what I needed to do (non-mission critical sites).
