Hopefully this will bring out a thoughtful discussion on something DNN might want to bring to its user interface to gain more non-programmer converts - not that we dont have a lot of those now :) - please keep it civil thanks

This morning I was greated with a message from AJAXIAN about a new tech preview by this site (http://www.synthasite.com/)

It looks wonderful and I wondered what peoples thoughts on having DNN have more of a drag drop interface / modal edit interface than the navigate to a control system it has now - I can see (in my imagination)  how the current modules could be rolled to work in such a system without to many problems (maybe I am too hopeful)

What do you guys think? (Would this be DNN5?)

I like the modal edit paradigm myself.

Reminds me of another popular site:  http://www.pageflakes.com/

I think it would be great to see DNN head in this direction and I have even begun doing a little work in this area.
A lot would have to change in the architecture to make it truly integrated, but maybe it could be implemented a "new wave" of modules.

with Microsoft Surface and other cool Web2.0 interfaces on the horizon, DNN should definitely be in this direction.  i added a Roadmap idea earlier about this -- at least Ajaxify the Module Actions.

I had forgotten about pageflakes - kind of a first attempt at that - i dont think the archetechture would be that big a move really

heres how i see it could be done

the edit url (iactionable inteface) would have to be changed to reflect the new idea but instead of it being a url it would be a set of parameters that would tell a modal edit dalog to come up and load the appropriate edit control - of course the modal popup would have a update panel in it that would do this so you would only need one modal popup on the page (after all you can only edit one module at a time right) other wise the edit controls would be almost the same - of course i would keep the editurl system already in place to allow developers to create views that can be navigated to

so really the default.aspx gains a modal poup dialog extender with update panel in it and some code to tell that panel to load a control - otherwise wouldnt the control already be able to do its thing?

What else would need to change?

Some modules require a lot more space than a modal dialog would present, but I guess you could make that sizeable.

Would a skin be applied to this new modal edit dialog? I'm thinking no, but there could be lots of potentail gotchas if that is removed without caution.  It sure would be really nice to get rid of the admin skins and all the associated code that goes with applying an admin vs. a portal skin.

Theoretically, I guess it could be a parameter set by the module developer if they want their edit controls to be displayed this way, so you could keep the old while encouraging the new.
