All I can find is a RED EXCEPTION in the log around the time that this happened...

I don't know if this has anything useful in it.  But the copy did generate a run-time error.

Also...when I click on the SETTINGS for the article module-the settings do not appear...it bounces me back to the home page.  So I can't  even see the settings.

Ok, from your last statements, it sounds as though it is just one articles module that is not showing it's content.

Before you go any further you should get a backup of your database.

Then we need to see if the articles module is missing it's content, or just somehow not connected to it anymore.
