I'm setting up a new computer to help me upgrade my site/custom modules to DNN4.5 and .NET 2.0 and I have some questions.

First, my laptop is running Vista Home Premium which apparently is supposed to come with IIS7 with all the functionality EXCEPT ODBCLogging, Windows Authentication, Digest Authentication, ClientCertificateMappingAuthentication, CertificateMappingAuthentication, FTPPublishingService, FTPServer, and FTPManagement.  Are any of these IIS7 features required for the DNN localhost for developing...generally?  I've checked my Vista and it seems to only have IIS6 on it at any rate but I would guess I could do a Windows update and get IIS7 if the article I read was true.

More broadly, is anyone developing with Visual Studio 2005 Professional on a Vista Home Premium machine?  Apparently it's murky whether or not it's supported.  I may end up putting XP Pro on the machine but I figure I'll give Vista a shot.

If anyone has gone through the pain of this new development environment I could use some advice before spending hours of agony before even getting to the point where I can start upgrading my custom modules over from 3.2.2.

Thanks for any help.

Here's what I had to do to get DNN/VS2k5 and Vista Ultimate up and running. This was a while ago, so a few things might have changed since then with DNN, as well as the fact that you're on Home premium.

I just reinstalled Vista at home tonight, though using Ultimate again and I'll be setting up VS and DNN later this week.

I am up and running on Vista Home Premium.  The biggest thing is to ensure that you run under the Classic Application Pool.

Overall it was fairly smooth.

If you have questions when you get it going let me know and i can try to help.

Ok, I installed VS 2005.  Then I installed the SP1.  Then the SP for Vista.  Then the Hotfix which apparently allows for F5 debugging on Vista Home Premium.  I copied over DNN files into a directory and set up IIS (although the IIS screens don't look like the screen shots I've seen from tutorials).  I did set up the classic app pool.

Then I installed/upgraded SQL Server 2005 Developer.  It gave me a warning on IIS saying that I didn't have all features installed for IIS which would affect some of the SQL features.  Not sure what features.  I then installed the SQL 2005 SP2 and it gave the same message about IIS.

So now I'm trying to create my DNN database in SQL but that's where I'm having an issue.  I can't find enterprise manager or some program similar that allows me to create the database.  I'm stuck on the database creation.  There appears to be a tool called SQL Server Configuration Manager but it doesn't look like the right one.  I've checked my hard drive and looked in the folder and I don't see any other .exe tools for getting my SQL database set up.  Not sure what's up with this.

I just noticed a whole forum dedicated to installation on here so I'm about to start reading!

SQL Developer doesn't have Enterprise Manager.  Check Microsoft's site for alternative tools and how to use the product you have.  It's not a DNN thing.
