I'm interesting hearing about this too. If there is anyway to have the search use google search as well as integrate the adsense portion of it.

Put the Google site search code in a Text/HTML module and you're up and running.  As long as Google spiders your site, you've got it.

I'm considering switching to using the Google search on my site instead of the core search engine and trying to work out the pros and cons. I want to index all user profiles, groups, leagues, events, properties and anything other link that is public on the site. Private groups etc. will not be indexed:

Core Search

Pros

  1. DNN standard (UI)
  2. More granular control over what is indexed and how it is presented and where it links
  3. Indexed as soon as task is run

Cons

  1. Restricted to basic patern matchs - e.g. "Rod%" whereas Google has a much more complex search algorithm
  2. A lot of work implementing search
  3. Search task overloaded on big sites - my task times out on PokerDIY (36k+ users, 1000 groups, 8000 properties etc.)
  4. I have just noticed my whole site crashes now when someone does a search due to the size of the indexed data

Google Site Search

Pros

  1. Fuzzy search - ie. Google Standard can find links instead of a direct search pattern match (this is probably the key point for me) - Google does this best
  2. Easy to implement
  3. Will index all content better with no overhead or schedule task
  4. Easy to implement Adsense in search
  5. Possible helps Google Serps (I have no idea, but Google may favour sites that use their Search, but I doubt it)

Cons

  1. Less control over what is shown - assumes all visible content is authorised (which should be the case I guess)
  2. RSS feeds are built into Search task so would need to keep this indexing anyway
  3. Google Indexing lag - page might not even be indexed

Anything else I have missed?

Since this was originally posted last year, I've moved almost entirely to Google for searching.  See for example:

http://www.naplesgov.com/Home/Search.aspx

Modified from code I found here (and the Google API docs):

http://www.eguanasolutions.com/DNN_Blog/EntryID/7.aspx

Getting ready to pull the DNN search off my site and use just the Google/AJAX search.
