A software house has used DOTNUKE all the way to develop my site and for the reason of my lack of knowledge, they have charged me a handsome amount of money. I was never told about the open source philosophy and cms. It is just really an upseting fact that they have charged me for something which is actually free. To my knowledge they have created many other portals based on DOTNUKE and charged money for it. I would appreciate any comments in this regard. How does thgis community support or oppse such issues.

The license for DotNetNuke allows for this. It is completely legal.

As for how the Community treats it, that may be a different matter. It might be frowned upon, and customers may not like it, but they are generally buying a service from someone, that service just happens to be built upon a free package.

The question you have to ask yourself is, could you have done the same thing yourself, without the help of your implementor?

I'm not saying it's right, but it has been, is, and will continue to be done by various companies out there.

Each situation is different.

I have many customers that contact me soley for me to setup a new DNN instance for them, granted they are not charged very much.

However, I will say that typically it is frowned upon by many areas of business to use an opensource component without the customers knowledge beforehand.

I think it depends on what they have charged you for.  I work on a "time & materials" basis, so I charge for the time that I spend on skinning and setting up pages, and I pass on the cost of any modules that I buy plus the cost of researching those modules.  It can, however, take quite a long time to design a site to the *customer's* requirements and satisfaction, so it's not always cheap.

I run a business that does just that! But I do educate my clients (at least the ones who care to listen) about the framework that their site is based on and my biz site got DNN all over it.

"I'm not saying it's right, but it has been, is, and will continue to be done by various companies out there." Chris, you can't be serious ... is that how core team members "endorse" using DNN for business?
