You know, until recently, the DNN web site has been a shining example of how great DNN can be. However recent issues are really concerning me.  Not so much with the framework itself, though we all know that it isn't perfect.  Mostly with the management of the site.  Here are a few issues that I see regularly that really MUST be taken care of ASAP.  Not doing so can and will negatively impact the gains that we have seen recently in DNN adoption.

  1. The site begins to crawl occasionally.  I have seen a handful blogs and threads on why.  So I understand it, but it still must be resolved.
  2. Certain areas of the web site become inaccessible for seemingly long periods of time (forums, blogs, etc.). When this happens, I notice that the menus dissappear as well.  I am sure that this is a cache-related issue (I've seen threads on this too), but it also needs to be resolved.
  3. The Forum Module was not properly debugged and somehow passed through the release tracker process in a broken form.  Now we are stuck with a semi-functional forum for community support.  (Wasn't the release tracker process created to catch problems like this?)

I am sure that there are other things that the person(s) in charge of managing the DNN site are aware of that I am not.  But I would think that such issues would have a higher priority then they do now.

Think about it.  If you had a retail company.  You would want your sales team to be the most presentable people you could find and represent all of the best things about your product.  You wouldn't want them coming in to work with ragged jeans or without a shower.  Your customers will turn around and go somewhere else.  Well, in this case, the DNN web site is the sales team for the community.

I love using DNN, and I have been turning people on to it for years, but what about the people that are not led into it by someone like me?

Will,

I am in 100% agreeement with these concerns.

The site performance in some ways can be understood as a simple lack of needed hardware, as it does appear to be tied to times of heavy site activitiy.

The pages that become inaccessiable is something that in my option is a major issue.  I will typically every day or so try to go to the forum, the URL will change but the homepage is the only page that displays.  This happens for ALL pages that I tried to visit.

The forum, is by far the most concerning issue in my opinion.  As most know I am an active participant in the community here, with over 4K posts in under a year of posting here.  The lack of e-mail notifications alone is very fustrating as I find it hard to follow through when helping people with issues here on the forums as I typically miss replies since I don't get notifications.  It would be higly impactical for me to try and use "my posts" to keep up as well.

It would be great to get some information from the corporation on these issues, I have no doubt that these items are being researched/worked on but I really think with as major of issues as these are that they need to be publicly addressed BEFORE they are fixed, at least that way to new visitors of DNN they will know that issues are being resolved, rather than seeing non-functional sites.

I have commented on the issue with the forums also.  I wouldn't send prospective clients to see this site now as it seems to act up according to the phase of the moon.  But seriously, I can understand some problems during the transition to a new version etc. but it has been a while and the problems continue having an impact in the support to the community and the overall image and perception of DNN.  It is kind of embarrassing to tell you the truth.

And how about that SLA Support being advertised???  Who are those guys???  This is also bad PR.  Have them take care of the problems.

Sorry to be critical, I do appreciate your work, but this situation is detrimental to DNN in general, specially skeptical managers who may consider its adoption.  I am sure you are fully aware of this...

Carlos

I'm newer to the DNN community, I 've been using DNN since May of 2007 but I also have noticed these issues with the site.

If I was brand new to the DNN Community, I would probably be disappointed in its performance. However, I have used DNN and I know its true potential and I hope these issues get resolved soon.

Whew!  It is good to hear others with similar opinions.  I wasn't expecting it.  As I said before, these issues I mentioned are fairly recent.  So, keeping the past few responses in mind, bringing a supervisor or manager to the site was a non-issue not long ago.  And that goes for prospective clients too.

This web site should be our shining star, showing us what a new person is capable of - not what it is today.

I do not at all mean to be disrespectful.  I just hope that this opening of dialog helps to get the DNN web site back up to being the great example it once was.

*EDIT*
I should also mention that I do not believe this to be a start of a downward trend or pattern.  I am supremely confident in the abilities, talents, and expertise of the Core Team, as well as Project Team members.  I am continually impressed by the updates I see made from version to version.  That goes for the organization of development and projects too.  There is a lot of stability in DNN.  It has proven itself over and over.  So DNN itself is fine.  The DNN web site just needs a little TLC.
