Hi, we're starting a DNN project on Monday and have never used it before.  In fact we've never developed in .NET either!!  We have hosting with MSSQL.

Can I just ask, is it hard for a newbie?  It's just a brochure site.

Our experience is in PHP, probably to advanced / guru level.  We have extensive experience with Joomla, which can be built without PHP knowledge.  We're good with CSS and general template building.  We are up for a challange and the money that comes with it!!

If we get stuck, we do have .NET developers who we can pass the job on to but we would like to have a go ourselves, first.  And hopefully do the whole thing.

Regards,
Jon.

  • you don't need .Net development knowledge to install and run a DotNetNuke portal, but you should have skills in running and configuring MS Windows Server and IIS.
  • there are a number of installation and configuration documents in the Documentation area (see Resources menu above), besides there are helpful tutorials at www.dnncreative.com
  • If you encounter problems, post them here :-)

Sebastien is spot on. .Net dev skills aren't relevant to the install and configure process, but understanding which security accounts the various IIS processes run under, and knowing your NTFS permisions, will come in handy if you have any problems.

Good luck!

Cheers chaps!!  I'll start reading up on NTFS permissions.  I did do a Microsoft MCP exam, so I've come across permissions and group access and all that kind of stuff before.  Hardest exam I've ever done actually, harder than anything that you'll ever have to do in a Physics degree, even.  There's the right answer and then there's the Microsoft answer.

This all sounds promising.  One further question, where's a good place to go to recruit developers, if things go wrong?  I've used Scriptlance and Joomlancers (obviously not for DNN).  Our .NET developers use their own bespoke CMS and have zero experience with this.

for recruiting DNN develoepers, there is a 3rd party web site www.dnnguru.com, besides, you can post job offers in this forum here.
