I'm not holding my breath for 5.0.

I hope nobody holds his breath for 5.0. Its always better to keep on breathing no matter what stress you are under. Anyhow, even though the visible changes in DNN 5.0 might seem minimal to the cashual observer, DNN 5 will offer great new oportunities to hosting providers and admins to delegate portal tasks to non admin users. Again.. not worth holding your breath for, but then again nothing is....

We are working very hard to get product out, anybody who follows Gemini in the core tracker would know this.

4.9.0 is nearly here, just around the corner.....

DNN5 is worth the wait, we are keen to get it right, and that's why it's taking so long, if we release it earlier we would be shot down for releasing a sloppy product. I am making sure, we are all making sure. We are definately getting there, the last beta was the first time where I could say "here is something that is nearly usable that could go into production" (just my opinion). So I am holding my breath, it's worth sufficating for :).

Cheers!

Alex

[My opinion again, you should note I am NOT promoting my own business interests here right now... :) ]

Because he (Tony) is in marketing and that is what trash marketers do.  For his potential customers he is trying to puff himself up as the greatest thing since sliced bread but then under his breath mutters about how incompetent he thinks the DNN core and community to be.

I've been steering clear of any of the threads Tony speaks up in but I'm getting sick of his complete marketing garbage.  He totally trashes DNN here on the forums, then tries to make it sound like he isn't trashing them in follow-up messages, then proclaims that he is using DNN 5.0 Cambrian on some hot new Windows 2008 Server machines.  Yeah, what a load of BS.

I echo the same response I've seen a few times in regards to Tony's messages: if DNN is dropping the ball or falling behind Tony, do you think you could do any better in steering the mothership and moving things along?  For any faults or misgivings DNN may have, for any delays on their release schedule, DNN is still a VERY good platform and does well to serve our needs for free.

Anybody in software development realizes that meeting a deadline but releasing crap is so much more damaging than completely missing a deadline but releasing a solid product.  In the end, nobody will even remember the missed deadline if the release is solid, but if the release is buggy and crap people will be talking about it for years to come.

So everybody whining about the "promised" release of Q1 2008 for Cambrian (which, BTW, I was present during OpenForce as well and I never got the impression that it really would come out Q1, but that it was a soft target they were hoping for) should just take a step back and wait for a release.  Their upgrade paths are typically pretty solid so you don't have to worry about creating a module right now and having it become obsolete with a 5.0 release; just get on with your lives and when the Core is ready for a 5.x release, they'll put it out there.  We can all trust that they'll do their part to make sure it is a solid release (just like 4.9 being in RC for several weeks now; they have identified and fixed several issues during the RC time).

I will warn you though - I'm not holding my breath for 5.0.  I was playing with Beta 7 last week and I couldn't even log in.  :(  I am guessing that 5.0 is going to be released at one of the OpenForce events because they have a pre/post conference training session on it.  However, I would really be careful about implementing 5.0 until they get it production stable.

you can almost bet that 5.0 will be out Oct 6..  or Nov 10..   the Europe and NA OpenForce dates..

Fooberichu,

I don't think it is fair to call Tony a trash marketer.  I am a very happy customer of his.  I have been using PowerDNN personally for a while now, and professionally for over a year.  I jumped there after continual disasters at my previous host.   Tony's crew at PowerDNN is always very helpful, very professional, and straightforward.

In fact, Tony took the time to reply to me offline to my previous question.  It was a thorough explanation of why he does what he does.  While I may or may not agree with the approach he takes, he has a solid response.  I won't post that response -- that is his business to do should he wish.

I would also disagree that Tony "totally trashes" DNN.  Frankly, there are worse offenders.  As a developer and designer, I am much more concerned with the lack of progress and communication and things like the FCKEditor Provider or the lack of XHTML compliance in the skinning engine or the lack of up-to-date documentation.  Tony's concerns -- as the operator of a business centered around hosting DNN installations -- run to a more strategic view, including how he will need to scale his infrastructure to support the new release.

That doesn't make Tony a trash marketer.
