Hi,  I've been asked to set up a page in my website (DNN) where lots of people can add information about a subject.  In other words, it would be a page like "all about widgets".   Basically a reference page for collectors of "widgets".   I'd like to allow registered users to add all the info that they each know about "widgets" to the page.  I would like to let them also post their "widget" fotos and describe them.   Other users would then want to search through the info, comparing their widget to the others that are posted, etc.   I'm thinking a "wiki" page, but that is a little intimidating for basic users to edit.

does anyone have any suggestions on how to set up this type of page?  I'm fairly new to DNN and my brain just isn't coming up with a good plan. :)

thanks for any suggestions!

A forum makes an excellent tool for this sort of thing. Content is wll organised into topics and threads, and each person can easily contribute. If you implement Active Forums then it will also handle the issue of uploading images as you can limit image size and number per post and it also resizes on upload.

A forum moderator can update one post a the top of each thread with the most relevant information from that thread. Alternatively you could create actual web pages and summarise the forum threads into those.

The problem with a Wiki is the lack of discussion functionality... it inevitably requires a forum as well.. and that creates a break in the workflow.

Thanks Rob.  Good points about using a forum.  I hadn't thought about the idea of having a moderator summarize by topic.  Thanks for the info on Active Forums.  I'll check that out too.

You mentioned creating web pages to summarize forum threads.  Do you know of a tool that helps automate that, or are you thinking that would be done manually?

In some ways I need more of a foto gallery type layout, in that people who are searching for info, may want to browse visually for the type of widget they are researching.  But I might be able to back link to fotos that they have posted in the forum.  hmm more to think about!   thanks for the ideas!

There are going to be loads of details to consider.

Personally I don't believe in automated content creation. It always fails. You just can't beat the ability of a human to filter and summarise a pile of content into something useful and succinct. Teh idea what people will come and create valuable content just doesn't happen. All you get is a mess that needs to be turned into valuable content. That's what I meant with creating separate pages to serve as the end-location for all of the discussion and input.

That said, the end-location could also be a purposefully-managed module such as the Wiki, or you could also look at Ventrian's Property Agent. That is designed for organising entries that have consistent feature-sets, in the way that houses have x bathrooms and x bedrooms, and cars have x cylinders and x doors. Each entry has a small gallery as well.

It all depends what the data is, how it needs to be organised and found again. Perhaps there's an example of something similar on the web that you can look at and use a a basis for requirements.
