I want to re-do our school website from Dreamweaver. I've found DNN and skins from Colour that will work perfectly. I've played around in DNN and created a mock website on my laptop but I need to know which version do I need to use to create the same web site on our schools server which not only has my school but several others.  Do I need the install package or the other one? I can't have the orginal website down while I work on ours. Thanks for your help in advance.

if you prepare the web site locally, you do not need to install DNN on the school site, but perform the following steps

  • login to your site as superuser ("host"), go to site settings and scroll down. at the bottom add the final domain address as portal alias.
  • zip the installation directory and your database (you need to detach, if you don't use file based connection string)
  • unzip on school server and install database. If necessary adopt both connection strings in your web.config file
  • setup IIS web site on school server properly
  • browse to your site

FWIW, you always need the Install version, unless you will be programming a new module.  You'll also find Dreamweaver of limited use when you create the site.

Thanks! Is there a place I can go to for more details on exactly how to do each step? I'm not a professional but I love your stuff!!!
