SEO and the HTML Search Summary

Does this affect rankings?  Should I be using it and if so should it be used like an around 25 words meta description?

 Thanks

Ian - the HTML Search Summary field is intended to facilitate the DNN site search and has no effect on your rankings in search engines.

Also, the meta description length limit is better measured in number of characters instead of words. See this post for more details.

Hi Tom

Thanks very much.  I thought as much but the help item quite misleadingly says:
"You can provide a summary to help the Search Engine Index this page"

Its strange but since the financial crisis hit I have had  a high percentage of my clients ask about SEO or to be more accurate DNN SEO.
I already have your site bookmarked and will re read your articles on this subject.

I wonder if an SEO DNN forum would find a use?

Thanks again

Ian

I've noticed an uptick of SEO related questions here in the DNN forums as well and I'm looking forward to address many of these issues / questions with my "Intro to DNN SEO" session in a couple of weeks at OpenForce in Las Vegas.

Oh, and maybe you are right ... maybe a dedicted DNN SEO forum is warranted at this point.

+1 to the SEO Forum - a lot of the advice given gets lost in the sea of other forums.

It could have a sticky post at the top answering the most common questions - that alone would help people self-serve with answers.

Answering the OP : it does help the search engine index : just not the Google, Yahoo, or Live search engines, it's talking about the inbuilt DNN search engine.

If you want to change the meta description, do so on the page settings that the Html Module is installed on.
