I may be confused about how to setup DNN for multiple portals.

I have a DNN setup on my Windows 2003 server with IIS 6. When I create new portals, I then go to IIS and select the main DNN site and add the site header under the advanced button, next to the IP address. The area for Multiple Identities. Is this correct ?

Also it seams that all of the portals store all the information in the same database. Is this correct ? Shouldn't each portal have it's own database ? What if I want to move one portal somewhere here, do I need to give them the entire database ?

Lastly, I am trying to access this database with SQL Server Manager Studio Express. However when I attach the database, it tells me that it cannot attach it because it's in use by another process. How do I attach it, so I can see what is in there ?

Thanks

  • Yes, if you have multiple web sites on your IIS, you need to add domain aliases to the web site configuration, section IP, as portal alias.
  • Yes, all portals share a single database. if you need to separate a portal from the installation, duplicate the database and remove unneeded portals via UI from both new installations. Note: there is no option to merge existing portal data into an existing DNN installation
  • for accessing database.mdf, please read here: http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Blogs/tabid/825/EntryId/1202/DNN-SQLExpress-SQL-Server-Management-Studio.aspx
