As I am looking for some free module for certain aspects, this thread might also help others adding their needs for a free module. As we are currently moving our current intranet to DNN, in the first step we only want to keep all existing contents and features and so not invest in professional modules (which will be part of the second step after we surveyed what requirements our people have).

What, in your opinion, ist the best free module for:

  • Content workflow (some users may write, some other may check, some other may finally publish)
  • Multilanguage content (contents - plus tabs if possible - are available in two languages, if one language version is not available, the other will be shown)
  • Article/News (simply putting new articles online with a pic, a headline, date, author etc. like in a blog)

It's worth paying a subscription for Ventrian just to get their news articles module (subscription price is peanuts plus you get a whole load of other good modules). News Articles is customizable for pretty much anything, there is pretty much always a use for it so I suggest you buy blindly here.

I second Alex's suggestion and add one of my own:  I recommend that you plop down (at least) the minimal $25 fee to get access to the Ventrian modules before moving your intranet content.  You should have an easier time setting up content thanks to the added features in the Ventrian modules plus you won't want to move a lot of content into DNN just to turn around and move it all again later between different modules.  That $25 spent right up front will more than be made up in time saved and headaches avoided where content is concerned.

Good luck!

For multilingual modules, there are a number of suggestions in the Localization forum - there are a number of free or cheap modules which are easy to use and provide good solutions. Multilingual support has been announced as a new feature in DotNetNuke for 2009 (I would assume Q3 or Q4)

For Workflow I know there are a few modules, but haven't tried them yet. Workflow has also been announced to become a new DNN feature in 2009.
