I just wanted to see if anyone had used DNN as a an Intranet before and could provide some tips in doing so.

I'm working on an intranet solution and one of the major problems is that most modules are portal specific instead of user specific. e.g. the News feeds module. I would like this to be configurable by the user so they can display content appropriate to them. Not sure if it is available but being able to configure the layout would also be great to customise a home page i.e. iGoogle. One thing that I thought would exist but had trouble finding was a My Profile module that a user is able to update with a photo and info and then have that displayed to other users. Which brings me to my next point, instant messaging. I am using the Chat module in conjunction with the who's online module but that doesn't really work a good IM module would also be great.

I may need to do some custom development but does anyone know of any good modules for intranet use.

Try http://www.ventrian.com - Private Messaging module. Subscribe and you get a whole load of other decent modules.

As far as good intranet modules well I don't really see the difference betweeen intranet and internet in terms of functionality. It all depends on what you want to do.

I've had experience with Engage modules, Smart Thinker modules (social networking if you like to call it that - you can upload your profile with a photo and do a whole lot more ), Ventian... all pretty good. Active forums is supposed to be excellent as well... there's also Active Social which is a direct competitor with Smart Thinker.

In fact within DNN there is the biography field whereby you can upload photos and bung in some text as well.

Well I've probably missed a whole load of other good companies who develop great modules.. and rather cheap at the price.

nb I don't get commision here.

Cheers

What you're looking for isn't exactly what DNN is designed to do and there are likely better options.  Otherwise, look at some of the social modules like Active Social.

I disagree. All my intranets run on DNN and they are very interactive. A website is a website in my view and it just depends on what your requirements are.

I agree with Alex.  Although, it took a lot of convincing (over 3 years), our Director finally agreed to allow us to use DNN for our intranet work, rather than spend more and more on an outside custom solution.  I moved into another area, but our Web Master, is using DNN 4.x for all of our current intranet development at the hospital.  It does take some additional work and preparation, but no more than any other off-the-shelf product. One of the more useful 3rd party modules is a forms builder module, can't remember the name, but it's saved our Web guy a lot of work.  Others are available too.

Now, speaking about the News feed module, there isn't any real user-friendly options for skinnning the module, other than the available skin containers, but you would need to give folks some way to do it.  The module look-and-feel can be modified as far as the feed goes, but adding css support in the XSL, but, again, that's not something a typical user is going to familiar with doing.  The older News module v3.0.1 is better suited to customizing XSLs, and is generally eaisier to support than the new module v4.0.1, due to the issues it has with validating, and trouble reported downloading various news feeds.  Also, some support of intra-module news syndication is out there, too.  Howerver, there are 3rd party news modules out there.

One other thing, we do integrate a lot of flash to the sites, which are custom created for various department needs.  All in all, I'd say you could use DNN, but it isn't going to be something that can be used without lots of training, if you want the departments to own everything for thier portal.  We take that into consideration, and build some standard looks, and allow them to add content, rather than make design desicions alone.  We interview and get a list of their needs, and then work out the best approach.

Cheers,
