Just how accessible is DNN?  I don't mean how easy it is to get to it, or learn how to use it, I mean how easy is it to make a DNN accessible to folks with disabilities (such as the visually impaired).  Section 508 compliance, in other words.

A project in my Washington state agency is just starting the design phase for a web-based system (for the state government intranet), and we need to make whatever we build Section 508 complaint.  I've beent trying to get the design team interested in looking at DNN as the basis for this system, but I've not seen accessibility discussed anywhere in the DNN-verse.  Has there been provision for this issue but nobody's talked about it, or is it just something that has not been addressed?

I'm looking for an answer to this too. Can anyone explain what standards DNN complies with and where we can see them? I realise compliance will also depend on the skins used, but what about markup produced by DNN?

In the Introduction to DotNetNuke it states 'The DNN framework also complies with the ADA (American Disability Association) standards for accessible websites'. What exactly does this mean? The WebAIM web site states 'there is no such thing as "an accessible web site per ADA standards"?'.

I like DNN and would like to use it for our Intranet, but need to understand it's accessibility first.

I'm with the Social Security Administration and we cannot implement any new code that doesn't meet Section 508 standards. In fact, we have tougher standards to meet but we can sometimes get exemptions if it is beyond 508. I think, where government use is involved, DotNetNuke will have to meet Section 508 standards and it would be nice to know that it does. In fact, I'll try to get our 508 review unit to look at this site if they have time. I do know the our national headquarters has an older DotNetNuke portal in operation but was in operation prior the the strict 508 requirements.

Thanks for your reply dotlwm. Let us know if find out more.

I can specify what standards we implement on our Intranet and would prefer to follow best practice and be compliant with current standards. I'm UK based so am governed by the Disibility Discrimination Act. I would have to look in more detail, but it looks equivalent to Section 508.

The legal requirement to comply with accessibility standards still seems to be a grey area, but it's easier to build it into the system now than find we have to do it later.

Also here in Italy government sites must be 'accessible'. Have anyone studied this problem ?
