Hi Geoffrey,

You came in here asking for feedback for a "Killer App". No one in this thread has seen or used your product and whilst Yala is clearly a grand thing on your mind, it is nothing to me other than what you have presented - A 30 minute marketing video and a few web pages displaying much the same. Your responses above are simply more of the same.

Not everyone in the audience is an idiot, and especially not here in a developer-dominated web forum. I'll summarise my feedback for you here:  Your marketing is classic 'snake oil'. I've given this opinion honestly, without fluff, and entirely for your benefit. Take it or leave it; deny it at your own risk... and best of luck with Yala.

Regards,
Rob

Geoff, please.... Do us all a favor. I've been around people who have played this game before and you fit the profile to a T.

You have this "amazing product", it's going to revolutionize the world, but somehow you can't seem to just show it and let it speak for itself. Then, if anyone questions your actions, you act is if they violated some sacred unwritten law and now you have justification as to why you won't show them what you have.

It's a nice game, but seriously you need to play it with someone else. Anyone who is involved in Social Media knows there is an abundance of really good tools out there and what makes a Social Networking site special is more than just the tools used to create it.

 Hi FM

Thank you for a most useful contribution. You are spot on: what makes a Social Networking site special is more than just the tools used to create it.

Which is precisely why I do not want to let the conversation degenerate to something as pointless as “which is better a screwdriver or a spanner?”

Nevertheless, the vast majority of discussion doesn’t rise to the heights of constructive dialogue (political debate on TV is the classic example of dismal interaction).

William Isaacs defines dialogue as a conversation with a center not sides. The Public Conversations Projects emphasizes that:

“The atmosphere is one of safety. Facilitators propose, get agreement on, and enforce clear ground rules to enhance safety and promote respectful exchange.”

That is why forums need to be moderated – to discourage bullies, flaming and trolls.

The Yala is not a social networking site in any conventional sense, which is perhaps why people have difficulty in understanding it.

I can only ever speak as an individual from my unique viewpoint. You can look me up on Linked-in.

I would very much like to know why you don’t feel comfortable to reveal your name, what you learned from implementing social media (not just the technical challenges) and why you perceive this as a game when it is meant in utter seriousness.

Kind regards

Geoffrey

 Hi Rob

I do not for a second doubt the sincerity of your loathing for marketing and snake oil.

The playwright Milan Kundera used to talk about “the fascinating imaginative realm where no one owns the truth and everyone has the right to be understood.”

I may be totally wrong in the way I am promoting the Yala. Maybe the DotNetNuke Community Member Announcements Forum is the wrong place. Nevertheless, I have no less right to be understood than you.

One of the factors that differentiate the poor quality debate you usually see on TV from constructive dialogue (see my reply to FM) is that success in debate requires simple impassioned statements, whereas success in dialogue requires exploration of the complexities of the issues being discussed.

I cited the BP example as evidence that the Yala is not snake oil but has a substantial heritage. BP spent over two million pounds on their “Better Relationships, Better Performance” extranet. The Yala has literally had more than ten years and millions of dollars spent on its development.

So please don’t take your bat and ball and go home. I would love to explore the complex issues that the Yala addresses with you.

Kind regards

Geoffrey

Hi Geoffrey,

There's no debate going on here. FM's perception and my feedback are part of the requested response to your marketing. Our job is done. It's now your job to take these reactions onboard and do as you see fit.

What my name is is really irrelevant here since you don't know me. As to the rest of your questions about me, they are equally irrelevant.

Look, your tactics are so transparent they make me laugh. When confronted with challenges you respond in two ways.

1. By going off on a tangent about something totally irrelevant.

2. By attacking your critics even though their criticism is relevant.

I've seen your tactics being used so many times by people who fit your profile. You really think you got us fooled, but like Robax said, we are not a bunch of fools.

Here is the thing, if you were really as astute as you appear to be you would know about patents and the importance of protecting your intellectual property. That should have been your first course of action in this exercise.

After that you start the marketing, and then there would be no reason to claim that you need to keep your product hidden for fear of being ripped off.

Something so novel would be the perfect thing to get patented.
