I really like DotNetNuke.  I'm an experienced IT professional, (20+ years), .Net vb programmer, etc. and should be able to install DotNetNuke and use it.  I FINALLY hit on the right combination in web.config and got DotNet Nuke installed (remote hosting service - DiscountASP.net).  O.K. so far.  Now I want a 2nd "portal" - at least I think that's what would meet my need.  I would like to have a separate domain name (i.e. http://www.doctorkaren.com) but hey, I'd settle for a subdirectory in my existing hosted site (peoplekeeper.us) running DotNetNuke (peoplekeeper.us/dnnwebsite/), or some other combination that would give me some separation between customer 1 (which is Tyner United Methodist Church) and a 2nd customer I want to establish; Dr. Karen Payne.

Try as I may, I can't seem to achieve what I want.  I'd feel stupid, but from the volumes of forum entries/blog entries involving setup and configuration, I'm FAR from the only one that has problems.  DotNetNuke seems like a great product - but I keep running into problems that have no obvious answers; i.e. creating a child (or parent) portal.  Read the online help?  Yeah, RIGHT.  First of all, setting up a child portal says to click on Parent oprtal type.  Just confusing, or a documentation error?  In any case, diligently following the online help, I still can't create a child portal - period.

Is there ANY concise, error free, documentation on creating a parent or child portal on a hosted site?

Or shall I just give up and see if some other CMS (mambo, joomla) is easier to use?

O.K., I spent more time griping than stating my problem.  I'm at my limit on fighting problems with DotNetNuke!

Hello

IMHO if your two portals are not related at all then I would make 2 parent portals - they act completely independantly of each other:
eg.
www.pokerDIY.com
and
www.dumbTV.com
are portals 0 and 1 on the same DNN installation.
I don't know where you can get any documentation, but don't give up hope - DNN has a few little quirks but it is improving all the time...

I can certainly agree with you. DNN is the most frustrating product I have ever worked with in my 12 years of doing this sort of thing.

However, that won't help you out... but this might: Are you getting an error message about passwords when you try and create the extra portal? If you are then you are getting an obscure problem that no one seems to have figured out yet. The nearest I have come is that I believe it is related to the use of auto-form fillers such as the MSN toolbar provides or those built into the browser. I religiously disable all form fillers when working as DNN admin or host in the site settings or portal screens. If you are having this particular issue then you will have to reinstall from scratch as I've found no way to fix it once it happens.

If that isn't the problem then some more detail will help here.

I run this on Webhost4life. Point all your domains to the same folder. Install DNN there using one of the domains (even the webhost's autoinstaller works fine). Then log into DNN and go and create a new portal immediately. The new portal opens when it is created. That's about all there is to it so long as everything is set up right. If you're on webhost4life, drop me your email here and I'll send you my notes.

Good luck... and always wear a helmet when working with DNN

I am actually suprised to hear that from you Rob, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I have found that the majority of install issues come from lack of asp.net experience in general. I have tried other asp.net applications and found them to be somewhate frustrating until i get past the beginning install but I also avoided asp.net issues when doing so.

Hi Crispy,

Thanks for the comments. I'm afraid it's not merely an opinion, but hard-won experience that makes me say it. The chap who started the thread above is obviously in the same boat that I and so many others have sailed in.

I've been over it many times and don't want to upset his thread here by going over it again in detail, but in my professional (and now also experienced) opinion, DNN will continue to fail a large number of people (who identify themselves as one of the intended audiences of the product) because it lacks an implemented communications strategy.

This thread here bascially results from that flaw, as do many of the others that I have read and assisted with over the past year and half that I've been inolved with DNN.

It's a cool product, but until someone in the core team finally sees the light, we will only have them telling new users that they must be inexperienced... it's called 'specialist arrogance' where I work.

In my view there is nothing in the DNN installation process that requires significant development expertise and could not be simply and logically documented and carried out by just about anyone with basic ftp and text editing experience. I had more than enough knowledge when I first started, yet the packaging, the documentation, the workflow logic, and the communications channels in and around the DNN community (not to mention some of the attitudes) all made the process very difficult and frustrating.

You'll know from previous chats that I'm a bit of a purist about these things. In communications I don't accept that there is such a thing as an inexperienced or un-knowing person... if they can't do something then they simply haven't been told correctly or clearly enough.

Anyhow.. hopefully someone will be able to sort out this chap's installation issue. I've gone for an obscure problem solution in my own efforts to assist because I'm pretty sure he isn't retarded.

Best regards,
Rob
