I set up a GoDaddy host, and I'm seeing two different versions of DNN depending on the asp.net runtime available on the server.  On GoDaddy, you can choose your asp.net runtime version, so if I see this correctly, DNN 3.x works on both asp.net 1.1 and 2.0, while 4.x only works on 2.0??

As I've gone over all these DNN sites, and looking at all the modules available, it seems there is a lot more available for 3.x than for 4.x

Is there any substantial features or benifits to going with 4.x?  Also, I see how it says you don't want to use 3.x with asp.net 2.0 if you are a developer.  I am planning on using a couple of modules, namely the xmod looks great, and I may have to contract out to get some custom modules made.   This is my first time on a windows server.  All my sites are on unix servers, although I'm so sold on DNN that I'd like to switch all of my sites over to DNN.

I'm just a little confused as to what vesion I should go with.   If I start with 3.x, I'm assuming I can upgrade to 4.x? (my host does allow for you to switch back and forth between the runtimes....)

A little enlightenment would be greatly appreciated

Thanks!

  1. DotNetNuke 4.0.x is functionally the same as 3.2.x. You are able to run 3.x modules inside 4.x without any limitation
  2. The old web project setup used by Visual Studio 2003 is not longer supported in VisualStudio2005. DotNetNuke 4.x. is the port to the new ASP.NET 2.0 project model.
    Benefits:
    1. Developers can work with the new VS2005
    2. There is a free tool Visual Web Developer Express (http://forums.asp.net/thread/1114393.aspx)
    3. You can use the new ASP.NET 2.0 features

Downside: Modules developed under DNN4.x can't run under DNN3.x/ASP.Net1.1

If you are new to DotNetNuke I would consider using DNN4.x using the Starter kit. Upgrading DNN3.x to 4.x is supported
