Cathal did a good job of explaining the purpose of this promotion. The official response is that this is a sales and marketing promotion and nothing more. There haven't been any changes in our plans regarding Active Social and Active Forums integration.

To answer the original question more specifically: Yes, we are still honoring our original plans to keep the existing functionality of Active Social in DotNetNuke Community Edition.

This is really a stupid move by the marketing folks. People not in the community who don't know about the long range plans for Active Social might buy this and then be upset when it's released as part of the core next year (I know I would be).

Wouldn't it be a better holiday promotion to release Active Social as free to EVERYONE, and clearly delineate which parts will remain free and bundled into the core, and which parts will require $$ next year?  This way, there is no confusion, everybody in the community is happy, and maybe more people would use the slow Christmas season to develop neat websites with this tool, which after all is the goal.

Well, sure, no disagreement there, Tim. But I think the case for early release as a "gift" to this open-source community is making an unintended point--doesn't an open source community have a right to expect that when the project team acquires a major module like ActiveSocial, it would immediately be made freely available along with its source code or at the least be more open and disclosing about the timing of its release, any enhancements to the product, and so on? Isn't the essence of healthy open-source community its openness and willingness to put the community first? It seems to me that this presents a test of the true nature and health of the DotNetNuke open source ethos. Just my 2.3 cents.
