What's the percentage of users/companies using v5.x vs 6.x vs 7.x? Is there a breakdown somewhere? Can this even be figured out?

Im sure that dnncorp internally has a pretty good idea based on callbacks to the Is Upgrade Available service - but do not recall seeing it published anywhere - and given 99% of all sites hide copyright details its not something that can be easily determined by external trackers.

BUT given the realatively small number of screams on the forums each major update - one would have to question just how many migrate upwards to new versions - or are they all just incredibly luckly and have smooth transitions.

My personal suspicion is that many sites - install and develop once - then rarely upgrade after that - which is shame - good knows there are some nightmare potential security issues with older versions.

I asked the question because if one creates a 7.x only commercial module, how much market share from prior versions customer base one is missing on.

Its been our frustrating experience that many sites seem to stagnate on one version or another. And to be honest once a site is stagnated regardless of the platform version that is where they seem to stay.

As such - it seems more likely these days that sales of modules tend to happen for NEW hostings - as opposed to older hostings.

we do have statistics but we don't share them publically (standard commercial reasons apply), however users are pretty good about upgrades (surprisingly good in many cases - though some of this may come from hosting providers/implementers who provide upgrades as part of their service) -we see substantial numbers of upgrades with many users being current or only lagging a few releases (there are some "orphaned" sites which never upgrade from their original versions - but as many websites have a lifespan of only a few years these tend to be removed in time - which is good from a security point of view as we rarely hear about dnn 3/4/5 sites). We also see substantial new installs (well into 6 figures per year) - and as Wes notes, newer sites tend to be the ones who are more active and thus buy more modules. If I was writing a module I would not worry about dnn 5.x, but certainly target dnn 6/7
