Hi. I'm new here. Wanting to develop some web portal apps using DNN. Have the book 'DNN 4' by Shaun etc. My first really basic question is: I am using a system with usoft XP Media Center installed. I dont think this has the IIS and Server 2003 etc. Can anyone confirm that I *must* no upgrade to XP pro before I can dcevelop and test portl apps?

Thanks much.

Correct me if I am wrong but I thought that starting with 2004-2005 versions Media Center was just XP Pro with the MS Media Center application, drivers, etc included.

You can check real quick by logging onto your media center PC and then right click My Computer and then select Manage from the list.   If you can do this and browse the Users and Groups, Servies etc.. you have XP Pro.

simon;

thanks for responding.

from wikipedia: "Although MCE is based on Windows XP Professional, Microsoft has disabled its ability to join an Active Directory domain post install. This effectively precludes the use of Media Center in a corporate environment. Media Center still retains most other Windows XP Pro-specific features, such as Remote Desktop and the Encrypting File System"

I can manage users and groups thru computer management window. And unders 'services' exists SQL server config, WMI and Indexing. That's all.

Does that mena that Server 2003 is there and I can install and test portal apps?

Thanks

george

No it does not mean that Server 2003 is there.  But you can install and test portal apps with WinXP Pro, ASP.NET, IIS, and SQL Express.

You need to install all of these components before you can start your DNN install.

You will need your Media Center (XP) install CD/DVD.   This has IIS on it.
Insert the CD and Navigate to Control Panel -> Add Remove Programs -> Add/Remove Windows Components then select IIS from the list and follow the prompts.

You will need to install the .NET framework.

You will need to install SQL Server Express 2005.

You will be able to manage IIS from your computer management console.   You can manage SQL with the SQL Management Studio.   The book you have should help quite a bit with the rest.  If you have further questions just add a reply to this post.  Good Luck!

One area that I had problems with is giving the portal folder the proper permissions. It seems that you cannot do this in media center, the option is not there.
