Forgive me if this is simple and I've overlooked a setting somewhere, but i would like to let users whom I've assigned folder permissions to via the file manager to be able not only to add files and graphics through the upload feature of the editor to their assigned folder but also delete them when no longer needed.  How do i accomplish this in the editor?  My only other thought is since we are hosting the site is to create folder shares and assign them NTSF directory permissions, map a network drive,  and allow them to manage their files/images this way. Any clarification is appreciated.

Thanks,

Paul

there is currently no option for granting users to delete and manage their own files or assign individual folders. AFAIR there is a free module UserFiles from www.bring2mind.net, that might suit your needs.

Hi Sebastian,

I looked at the module you mentioned but it looks like it hasn't been update for quite some time.  I really wouldn't want to rely on a feature this important and use a 3rd party module that seems to have lost some of its momentum.  I also wouldn't want to get my users accustomed to a work process that relies on a module that's not being regularly updated.

May I ask what are the reasons it's not an option or not an option as of yet?  I could speculate security concerns.  It seems like a great option to have, especially if you have 20+ content editors adding files/graphics each day.  Just from experience, much of these files/graphics may only serve a short purpose as far as content goes. I certainly don't want to give content editors admin priviledges just to get to the file manager and I certainly don't want to have to communicate to each user whether or not certain files can be archived or removed completely.  As of now, I have all net additions with files/graphics each week.  It would also be nice not to have to use another module to manage this process.  I would like to see this functionality contained within the file and image upload templates users are already accustomed to.

Thanks for listening,

Paul

Paul,

first, as far as i got to know, Peter Donker from Bring2Mind is a serious developer and his DMX module is very highly regarded.

Of course I understand, that this is an important feature for you, but there are numerous other features requested and the core team has only limited resources. On option is to sponsor a feature - either develop it yourself and donate the code to the project or do a financial donation to get it implemented by one of the professional core members.

Hi Sebastian,

My intent was never to question the credentials of a particular module developer - I just made note of several things while on the site, namely forum post concerning the free module you mentioned and last module releases and versions of dnn that were supported. Did you mean to direct me to his DMX module?  Should I check that one out as a possible solution?  I also don't want to make the impression that I am seeking a feature that is only important to me. I am simply trying to distribute the content management of my site and would like to accomplish this in a way that is dnn intuitive for my content editors - meaning familiar interfaces they are accustomed to seeing, such as the file and image upload templates.  I guess I assumed I would speak for many others who would like to see this as a feature of the editor but maybe others are smarter than me and have solved their problems in other creative ways.  If so, I would love to hear from some of them.

As far as donating any development skills, I am just getting started with module development and any code I donated might be better suited for teaching others what not to do:-)  But in the meantime, I hope I can contribute something to dnn in the form of feedback from end users as it relates to application use and adaptibility in small to medium size organizations.

I was not aware that we could designate financial donations toward a professional core member to get features implemented in modules.  I would defininitely ante up a contribution earmarked toward this additonal feature if I could get a read from others here if they see this as a viable and necessary addition to the functionality of the editor.  Maybe they'll also consider a contribution in one form or the other.  Like I said though, maybe they have solved their problems in other creative ways and may not even consider this an issue and past by this post without much thought.

Finally, this may sound a little self-aggrandizing, but I would hope my contribution would benefit a larger audience than myself and ultimately add value to dotnetnuke as a whole.

Paul
