BTW, the problem is occuring on our production server which is Windows Server 2003. I just tested it locally on my development Windows XP Pro box and it worked fine. Perhaps its a configuration issue? Any ideas?

Hi Frank,

The original issue with downloads was a bug in the core.  But if you have upgraded to DNN 3.3.7, the problem should have been fixed.  Try clicking the "synchronize files" button in the File Manager (use the "recursive" checkbox to do them all at once), and see if that helps.

I tried synchronizing files-- no luck. It doesn't work when I upload new files from scratch, either.

If the problem is in the core, is there a way I can check the relevant code? (is it in an .aspx file or compiled into the DotNetNuke dll?) ...Any information on that specific bug that I could check? Is it at all related to server environment? ...Note my previous post that it worked when I ran the site on my local Windows XP machine.

I found this in my web.config httpHandlers section... is this correct?
<add verb="*" path="LinkClick.aspx" type="DotNetNuke.Services.FileSystem.FileServerHandler, DotNetNuke"/>

thanks for the suggestions....

I checked back in my upgrade error logs to see if anything is related. Could the following be related to the problem, from my DNN 3.2.3 upgrade?

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: The ALTER TABLE statement conflicted with the FOREIGN KEY constraint "FK_Files_Folders". The conflict occurred in database "mydatabase", table "dbo.Folders", column 'FolderID'.
at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.ExecuteNonQuery()
at DotNetNuke.Data.SqlDataProvider.ExecuteADOScript(String SQL)
at DotNetNuke.Data.SqlDataProvider.ExecuteScript(String Script, Boolean UseTransactions)

ALTER TABLE dbo.Files ADD CONSTRAINT
FK_Files_Folders FOREIGN KEY
(
FolderID
) REFERENCES dbo.Folders
(
FolderID
)

...or this error, for the 3.3.1 upgrade?

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: The ALTER TABLE statement conflicted with the FOREIGN KEY constraint "FK_Files_Folders". The conflict occurred in database "mydatabase", table "dbo.Folders", column 'FolderID'.
at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.ExecuteNonQuery()
at DotNetNuke.Data.SqlDataProvider.ExecuteADOScript(String SQL)
at DotNetNuke.Data.SqlDataProvider.ExecuteScript(String Script, Boolean UseTransactions)

/* This sets all cache root folders to protected */
/*************************************************/

UPDATE Folders
SET IsProtected = 1
WHERE
FolderPath = 'Cache/'

/* This tries to apply a foreign key on the files/folders tables */
/*****************************************************************/

IF NOT EXISTS ( SELECT * FROM sysobjects WHERE id = object_id(N'FK_Files_Folders') AND OBJECTPROPERTY(id, N'IsForeignKey') = 1)
BEGIN
ALTER TABLE dbo.Files ADD CONSTRAINT
FK_Files_Folders FOREIGN KEY
(
FolderID
) REFERENCES dbo.Folders
(
FolderID
)
END

....Then again, I'm running an identical database on my local machine, so I can't see how this problem would not be coming up when I run it locally.

I tried removing the Files with no FolderID reference, creating the FK contstraint, and re-synchronizing the file manager. It didn't help. I'm going to roll back to DNN 3.1.1 (what I was originally using) and retry the upgrades, step by step.

By the way, the links still work in Windows XP Pro, but not Windows 2003 Server. Last time I had an issue with pdf files like this, it was related to IIS gzip compression... but I have disabled gzip compression for pdf files on my server. Could this be related to the problem?
