It seems that a user who belongs to a role that is granted rights to update a 'document' module (but is NOT an administrator), can select the document if it is in the root level of the file manager, but cannot develop the treeview to access subfolders. If an administrator, there is no problem. Is this a logged bug ?

Go into the file manager and set permissions on the subfolder for the user that you wish to see the files in the subfolder. That should fix the issue.
