I'm new to DNN and I'm not really sure how to do this.  I want only registered users to add and view documents but that is all.  I don't want them to have the ability to edit the entire module - just the ability to add and view documents.  Currently, it seems I have to give them "edit" mode to the entire Documents module.

What am I missing?

Thanks

If I am understanding you I don't think you are missing anything. As far as I know if a user is given permissions to edit  the Documents Module they can edit everything about the module. As far as a feature goes this is not a bad idea. Having in the settings a drop down that allows you to define a group that can Add documents only would be fairly straight forward. I would probably set it up as a grid with 3 columns;

 Group  Add Edit   Delete
 Registered Users  X
 Admins  X  X  X
 Spell Checkers    X

I have not looked at the Documents road map. I don't know if this is the works or not.

You are correct with the permissions.  The key here is that you can allow users to only upload files to specific folders based on their user permissions.

At this point I do not have a feature request for "user supplied content" as there are a lot of risk associated with allowing any user to upload/add content and the module would really need to be changed to handle that situation properly.

My recommendation would be to have a look at the Repository module as it is built around the concept of User Submitted Content.
