1.) How to make web application in DotnetNuke? Does we have to make a new project in the Desktopmodule folder of Dotnetnuke to create web site?Basically question is that does we need to make a web site in dotnetnuke folder or we have to make it in a different project.

2.) How can we work on a Dotnetnuke project which is present on the server.Does we have to first download the whole project data and then have to configure it on our system and then make the changes into it?

3.) How does database work with the modules and the whole site?

Please help me in understanding about the dotnetnuke.

Thanks,
Abhishek Tiwari

Abhishek,

You should start by downloading the DotNetNuke package that includes the source code. When you extract this project on your computer you'll get the following folders and files:

/Bin

/Library

/Website

/DotNetNuke_VS2008.sln

/DotNetNuke_VS2008.sln.cache

/DotNetNuke_VS2008.suo

Open up Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 and go to File > Open and browse to the 'DotNetNuke_VS2008.sln' file. This will open the DotNetNuke project.

In order to get the website running you should point your IIS to the /Website folder. This is the root of DotNetNuke. You'll need to read the help files for setting up the web.config file and your database for the system.

You should also read the documentation or many web articles on "creating modules for DotNetNuke" (search Google). Customized modules you create will be created under the /DesktopModules folder yes.

Honestly though, you should really read a lot more documentation on installation and module development. You'll learn so much in a few hours reading that it'll be worth all the time you'll lose struggling to figure it out without reading.

Cheers, Dylan

Abhishek,

I develop modules in a separate directory from the DotNetNuke Source.  I use the information provided by Joe Brinkman in this post.  It describes some additions to the project file that will copy the appropriate files to the desired DNN installation for testing.  Works well and is very easy to implement.  Nice part about this method, to test against a different version, just change one line in the project file.

Also VS2008 allows you to edit the project file -- simple unload the project, and VS2008 then allow you to edit the project file.  Save the file and reload... simple.

You still need to read ... like the post I mentioned... great stuff -- time well spent!!!

Hope this helps ...
Paul.
