Hello;
I am new to DNN. I am using godaddy for my hoster and they have DNN as an application to install. When I installed it, it wants a subdirectory to install to and does not install to the Root. Can I just move the entire thing to the root so that the Global asa and Default bootstrap can be called?
My account has ASP.NET 3.5 and Sql Server 2005 So it installed but I can't get to the application if it insalled in a subdirectory. Also there is PHP code in the site from former joomla installs. However this is an IIS7 shared hosting account.

Also I noticed that it has VB as the base language. Is not DNN written in C#? I was hoping to change some stuff or add things in C#. any comments.

Not sure about moving to the root, but my DNN is in a subdirectory and it works fine. We are hosting locally so no hosting providers to deal with so maybe something on the GoDaddy side. Anyway, I'm sure you'll get lots of answers on that part as others do it. For the C# vs. VB, both work fine. I believe the core is written in one language for simplicity sake on makings upgrades and what not. Who wants to maintain to sets of code that do the same thing but are written in different languages... and then testing. The idea is you can import modules written in both languages. I have some in C# others in VB, just depends on what the module maker used (or which language you're more comfortable with in if you make your own). As far as modifying the source code to do different things, i'd lean against that for upgrading purposes. You would have to make sure all of your customizations get carried over if you upgrade to a newer version.

Hello Peter,

Hosting Location
Regarding your hosting, I am  not clear about what you are doing, are you on a shared hosting account?  If so, I would imagine that DNN needs to be in the root of the shared hosting account.  I am honestly not sure about that though.  If you expand on the question, maybe some one else can offer more accurate advice.

Modifying the Core
I think you will find that you will not need to modify the core.  I have been working on DNN now for 1.5 years most of the time in VS2008 and I have never modified the core.  In fact, I do not use the source code most of the time, only the compiled version.  But that does not mean that you cannot modify the system and provide custom fuunctionality.  When you start to explore the system more, you will start to see how flexible it is and that, minor tweeks or spending 50 - 100 US dollars can buy you a module or even a set of modules that can set the world alight.  BTW, DNN is build with VB, but I do all my work in C#.  No hassle at all.  One final note: DNN Corp are releasing new versions once a month and have an aggressive road map for future development.  You want to remain on that curve, so do not modify the core, otherwise you exclude yourself.

Enjoy it,

Godaddy is using plesk which does not support applications in the domain root - there are a couple of lengthly threads in these forums about Godaddy already. I do use the source version as I use to modify the core - for contributing to new versions. However, this should be the only need for it, otherwise you will be fine creating your own module in any .Net language, templates are provided in vb and c#.
