Hello,

I am new to DNN and have no IIS or Database experience. I have installed DNN 6.1.2 onto a Windows 7 PC, using all default settings. I able to browse to http://localhost/dotnetnuke/Default.aspx , so I know I have installed DDN correctly.

I would like to add another local test Site, so I can get to grips with the basics without breaking the default Site, but I am stuck.

I understand that I need to do the following:

1. Add another Web Site using IIS Manager (by right-clicking on the Sites folder)

Site name:

Application pool: DefaultAppPool

Physical path: c:\inetpub\wwwroot\dotnetnuke

Binding: http - All Unassigned - 80

Host name:

2. Add a new Site (via DNN Site Manager).

Site Type: Parent

Site alias:

Title: My test DNN site

Template: Default website or blank?

I think I have some of it right, but If someone could fill in the missing blanks for me I would be very grateful (for example for Site name please do not just say "add you site name here" because I think I am getting the 'syntax' wrong in my answers.

Please can you also confirm the full browser address I would then need to go to.

Please can you also confirm if I need to add an entry into the hosts file.

I have spent a long time trying to find the answer to the above, but surprisingly cannot find a simple step by step guide for a task I would assume many newbie uses would want to do.

Thanks in advance for any help given.

Paul

Hello,

DotNetNuke supports the concept of portal alias's (see the wiki for more - http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/W... )

As such you do not need to add another IIS instance to support more than 1 unique domain per dotnetnuke instance -instead you can add hostheaders in http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/li... . Please note, you will need to have a domain that resolves to the IP address of your IIS instance. Once that's in place then you add a parent portal for this new domain (if you want an entirely seperate site) - http://helpsite.dotnetnuke.com/Online... -if you don't want an entirely seperate site you just add the new URL as a portal alias.

Hi

I'm translating from spanish so excuse me if my english is weak.

I was at the same spot than you and this is how I got out of it.

All the documentation about how to add a parent site in  DDN is correct, just follow it to the letter and you'll be ok. Be careful to name your alias localhost/aliasname. The missing part is in the IIS side. I went to the IIs Manager and I defined a new virtual directory at the PARENT level of my dotnetnuke 1st installation and gave it the same physical path than it.  I named it aliasname, Then made an application out of it and BANG it worked like a charm.

Haven't seen anything like this in the forums though, but it works.

Good luck
