I am trying out the free trial at demo.dotnetnuke.com, which uses the Professional Edition.  It is so primitive and unwieldy that I feel like I must be missing something.

  • There are two skins installed, and there appears to be no way to install any other skins.
  • On the skins I that are loaded it doesn't appear that you can move the main menu in the Layout view.
  • Its not clear how you can have multiple menus.
  • When I try the File Manager option it often says I have either logged off or don't have privileges to upload, yet other admin pages work.
  • When I'm in the Admin view it still offers my to change content and layout, rather than just assuming I will be administering the regular pages.

These kinds of problems make it seem as though it is several years behind CMS's like Joomla and WordPress, but the promos make it sound as if many thousands of users are using it.   Am I missing something big?  Is the demo functionality not current? I honestly think I must be missing something if so many other people find it useful.

the demo is a limited experience, if you want to try out the full capabilities I recommend installing locally and playing with it.

As to your questions:

1. you cannot upload new skins as skins can contain code (e.g. asp.net codeblocks) which would allow demo users the ability to do pretty much anything (e.g. attempt to hack the server, edit other demos sites etc.)

2. skins uses the concept of skin objects to determine where content is -skin objects such as menus/login etc. are fixed in place in advance (tough skin variants typically allow you to select alternative versions of the skin where the object is differently placed e.g. a vertical menu rather than horitzonal) .

3 again it's up the individual skin - you can have as many menu's as you like, in different orientations and with different data (e.g. horizontal menu listing level 0 [top level] items with a vertical menu showing the siblings of those parents)

4.this is mostly the constrained demo experience AFAIK

5.i assume you mean "edit" view and not "admin" view - this is expected behaviour and comes around from the granularity of permissions e.g. a user can have module edit permissions and page edit permissions.

You're right.  The demo is very limited.  The "big thing" that was missing was the Host menu options, which is where you can control your site.  Also, some Admin and Advanced options were missing as well.

I was finally able to get a local version running and can see these options now.  My recommendation for getting a decent perspective is to download a trial version.
