We need to send email from a custom module and have the from address not be dependent on an external SMTP server. The end user is not willing to give access to the SMTP server.

you can't send emails w/o an SMTP server, sorry.

Sebastian is right - but normally it should be no problem to use any SMTP server as long as you do not set it up as a "spammer". There are quite a lot of free mail servers for Windows on the market like hMailServer (which is written in .Net and can use SQL Server or mySQL). Just read about SPF when you set up your stuff...
