Hello :)

I have a client who wants me to redesign their website, which runs on the DNN platform. I am completely new to this platform and was wondering if I could get some tips on the best way to go about doing this.

My questions so far are, can I use my own html design and still take advantage of the DNN features? Or do you think it would be best to utilize a pre-made template?

My last concern is that I'm not exactly sure what version of DNN is on this server, so I'm worried that I won't be able to install any templates.

So I guess I'm just looking for a good starting point. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, you can use your own skin design.
Yes, you can use a skin made by someone else.
Yes, you can take a purchased skin and modify it to fit your design -- often a nice compromise between a custom skin and someone's stock skin.

If you are willing to spend $80, then DNNCreative.com is a great place to learn about DNN skinning and other topics. There are some terriffic "worked out examples."

The nice is is that (for the most part) skins don't fall behind as DNN grows. Yes, sometimes updates are in order, but site updates are in order on a 2-3 year cycle anyway.

You should find out, though, which version of DNN your client has installed. Then, the first order of business should be to upgrade to DNN 7.3.2 and continue to upgrade on a regular cycle.

Hi

- To know about the current DNN version, you can check under Host -> Host Settings. It requires host/ Super User access.
- About UI, In dnn store you can find lots of nice skins. (http://store.dnnsoftware.com/home/product-list/packagetypeid/5). You can simply install skin package in your website and also do modification on top of its as per your requirement.
- For your own template, you need to go for skin development process. (http://www.dnnsoftware.com/wiki/page/skins)
- If you also wants to upgrade you DNN version to latest version i.e, 7.3, you first need to look at all 3rd party modules that has been used in your current site (Admin -> Extenstion). And is all those modules are also going to be compatible with latest version as well. For upgrade process you should follow upgrade path (http://www.dnnsoftware.com/wiki/page/suggested_upgrade_path)

While I've created my own skins, I prefer to buy them and build that cost in to the redesign estimate. My time is better spent on other things and the skins usually cost less than $100 each.

Upgrade to DNN 7.3.2, not 7.3.0 or 7.3.1.  As soon as 7.3.3 comes out, upgrade again.  You can find upgrade instructions and a suggested upgrade path below.

The skinning advice here is very good.  You have many options.  Having an existing design always makes things easier too.

While you can find the DNN version using the previous advice, you can also find it out by checking the properties of the DotNetNuke.dll file, or the latest version listed in the Version table of the database, if you cannot login with appropriate permissions.
