Is there no way to tie the DNN platform to an existing instance of  SQL Server? I really hate to install the express edition when the full server is already on my development machine.

yes, that's a standard option, when you're installing just hit the custom radiobutton and give the details of your database and security credentials (you must create the database first and grant it permissions, typically dbo) - http://www.dnnsoftware.com/Content/Dn...

I am glad to hear it's possible, but still having trouble. I do not see a screen like the one on the page for your link. What I see when I try the options I find for downloading DNN is a screen with a dropbox telling me SQL Server is not installed. My machine has named instances of both 2008 and 2102.

where/how are you trying to install DNN - are you using Microsofts WebPI?

Yes. When I use the page at http://www.dnnsoftware.com/community/... the Web PI is launched, and I get a message:

Microsoft Web Platform Installer couldn't find the product you tried to install. Either the link you clicked is incorrect or you may be overriding your feed with a different feed.

If I launch the Web PI myself and search for the DNN install, I get the dialog box with the dropdown that offers no choice to select one of my existing named instances. I'd be happy to post some screen shots, but don't see how to do that.
