Skins are implementing the design for your site. If you plan a major upgrade, e.g from DNN 5.x/6.s to 7.x, you might face compatibility issues, as DNN changed base css file.
Usually, you should consider together with the site owner to redo design of your site to "modernize" the site - this does include support for mobile devices. It depends on the Corporate Design requirements, whether you are able to use a standard skin or need a custom tailored skin. Note: it is usually not worth the effort to upgrade an outdated skin.

Regarding SMTP settings: check capabilities of the SMTP server - if it supports SSL, you should enable the setting to use it.

Database tab in DNN dashboard module is missing necessary information, therefore you should consider using other tools as well.
If you are having direct access to the database server using SQL Server Management Studio, you should use the tool. Connect to the server select root node for your database and right click to select properties. Check file sizes and max size, you may consider shrinking files, if there is a risk to hit it. Right click root node and select Reports > Standard Reports > Space Used by Top Tables to identify tables out of size. If there are issues with your database and database performance, please check out http://www.iowacomputergurus.com/Port... and http://dnnscript.codeplex.com, also consider acquiring support from a know DNN expert.

Regarding backups: make sure, database backup and file backup are taken around the same time, otherwise there might be important files missing.
