Has anyone tried the Amazon EC2 for hosting DNN sites.. i'd like to start a thread with info about how EC2 is working with DNN.. including versions.  Transfer of data, cost etc.

I've been using Crystal tech for years and they are gettting more and more expensive.. i have multiple sites with them on a shared and dedicated environment.  If you have a small site then its ok, but when you get big there are perormance issues.  Now that we are growing we thought about hosting our own sites and developing our own server environments.....
but now with the new cloud technology it may be better to use a large hosting company like Amazon for DNN websites.

I will update this thread the more we move forward with issues and costs... we're really looking for a cost efficient... aka a couple hundred dollars a month for a fast dnn website...

Please post your thoughs and experiences.

Hazen

I have a few clients that have tried EC2 and only one that actually stuck with it.  Overall it works, but it just depends on what you are doing as to how successful it will be.

We currently have a dnn site running 05.01.04. Catalook 6. Dnn masters for seo and product sitemap. i've tried a bunch of different skins to speed it up. on a server with 1 gig of ram. Spending around 300 a month in dedicated server prices. Really looking for alternatives to speed up the dnn sites.. i have tried most of the tips and tricks and looking for a longer term speed up option, along with cost effectiveness.

Hello

Interesting that your hosting mirrors ours - we use Crystaltech and 3Essentials.
I would say 3E has better support (since Crystaltech got taken over by NewTek) but Crystaltech's systems are more reliable.

Looking into using Amazon EC2, I have the following notes

First, this is helpful:
http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/817/am...

except it glosses over key points:

- I chose a micro instance to keep testing costs to a minimum
- "For this demo we are picking the "default" Security Group" - this is incorrect - the Security Group needs to be the one you set up earlier
- don't use IE as you will not be able to download the key pair file
- once DNN is running on localhost, you need to add a portal alias for your public DNS so that you can access it on the web

I'm currently looking into upgrading the image version to the latest DNN version.

Cheers
JC
