I have a DNN 5.2.1 site truthinequity.com that is often featured on Fox news and this causes a lot of people to go to the website.  This morning the site was one Fox again and we started getting a page that said DotNetNuke error with the return to site button (which did not return to site) in the url we had the following message:

40&error=Object+reference+not+set+to+an+instance+of+an+object.&content=0

After some panic attacks we rebooted the the server and it seemed to be o.k.  My current theory is that there was an error related to the database. But what should I look at to avoid this in the future?

In host settings I have the following settings:

module cache provider = file
cache setting = moderate
Authenticated Cacheability = ServerandNoCache
compression settings: No compression.

Any help would be appreciated - there were a lot of people who could not get to the website who wanted to - not a good thing!

PS the website is on a dedicated server at Godaddy

Oh where to begin.

1. In my humble, and completely personal opinion, GoDaddy should never be used for hosting. They provide great DNS and Domain pricing (I have 150+ with them) but their hosting flat out blows.
2. Read the performance best practices page in the Wiki http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/W...
3. You are on a fairly old version of DNN, 5.5 and 5.6 had a number of performance improvements.
4. Cache setting should be Heavy
5. Compression should be either GZip or Deflate (if you don't have compression on in IIS)

Thanks.  I advised the client against Godaddy as host provider, but they insisted :)

First I would check the DNN Event Log for more details about the actual error.   If you can't find anything useful in the DNN Event Log, I would then check the windows event viewer since you said it was a dedicated server.  You should be able to get the full error message from one of the two locations.

Are you using a local sql server instance? Meaning that the sql server database is also on the same box as the website or are you using one of GoDaddy's SQL Servers?

Hi Will:
The event log was showing 1000's of lines of page load errors. Yes, the SQL server is on the same box as the website.
