I normally leave caching off while editing my site.  In this state however its dreadfully slow!

If I set caching to Moderate or heavy, the site performance increases dramatically, but if I add a module to a page or make changes it disappers, I assume because the page is cached.

What is the best practice for maintining site performance and being able to edit the site at the same time?

Ideas?

you should disable local browser cache, this should fix display issues - unless you are using a really old version of DNN.

Sebastian - why would that be true?  I NEVER turn off browser caching to edit my site.  The OP seems to be talking about server cache settings.

Best wishes,

Gavin - are you using an account with administrator privileges when you edit?

I have some recollection (but not proof) that DNN turns off (some? most? all?) server side cacheing when you are logged on as an admin.

Maybe a proper expert will be along in a minute.

Gavin - it may be more productive to try analysing why your site is slow. If you can fix that it improves stuff for everyone.

Tell us more about the site - large/small, lots of traffic/little traffic, serveer busy with other work...?

Best wishes,
- Richard
