Our robots.txt file has inaccurate information and I can't for the life of me determine where I can go to edit it.

IT Company was the one that developed our DNN website, so when they finally gave me access to the back-end server, I discovered there is a robot.txt file in 3 different places - and none of which seem to update on our website.com/robots.txt and our search engine rankings are suffering because of it. 

My questions are:

  • Can the true robots.txt be updated through the admin/host menu on DNN directly?
  • Where is the robots.txt located?  I've seen that it should be placed in the 'root', but where, specifically is that?

The current three locations that the existing robots.txt files are in:

  • /dotnetnukebak/robots.txt
  • /inetpub/wwwroot/dotnetnuke/robots.txt
  • /inetpub/wwwroot/dotnetnuke - copy/robots.txt

Could they be somewhere else?

Assuming that your web directory is /inetpub/wwwroot/dotnetnuke, it would be the robots.txt file in that directory (the middle on in your list).

From the names, I'm assuming that the other two are backup copies or similar.

To know for sure, open up IIS and look at the properties of the website with the bindings for your URL. The properties of the website will identify the root folder for the installation.

you would edit the robots.txt using a simple text editor (like famous notepad.exe) on the server (or download, edit and re-upload the file, if you don't have desktop access).

Would you mind elaborating how finidng the bindings of the URL is done?  I opened the website, right clicked to 'properties', but found nothing that referenced 'bindings'.

Hi Sebastian, the robots.txt file can be reuploaded directly through DNN?  How would I go about doing this?  I don't see anything in admin/host indicating that I can replace the robots.txt.
