I searched and am surprised this is not a FAQ...

I recently upgraded DNN (to 04.09.05, not ready to take the 5.x plunge quite yet). Some of the modules included with the DNN download are not up-to-date with what's downloadable from codeplex (and the Host/Modules screen correctly shows the latest versions available for download).

So I have two questions:
1. What's the general procedure for upgrading to a downloaded module .zip file?
2. I did this years ago as I recall (User Defined Table I believe) and the upgrade caused us to lose data for existing module instances on our pages. Is that to be expected? Is there a workaround to preserve data? Did I do something wrong?

Many thanks in advance!

it is fully understandable relying on DNN 4.9.5, the most reliable DNN version, we prefer for our clients as well. Regarding module upgrades: check, whether the module is compatible (at least Form And List, Reports and Events modules require DNN 5). Download packages from codeplex and use "install module" from Host :: Module Defintions, to install it. I am not aware of any data loss - do NOT uninstall previous version!

Thanks for your response!

Regarding DNN 4.9.5, my concern is security. Our site was recently hacked (it was 4.7.0). If security holes are discovered, they will not be fixed in 4.9.5, is that correct? 4.9.5 has not changed in about a year, is that correct?

Regarding module upgrades, I'm not clear on what to do with the downloaded .zip file. Is it like an upgrade - should I unzip it over the existing web folder? Should I put the .zip file someplace in particular before using Host :: Module Definitions to install it?

Regards,

   Bob

I found my answer elsewhere. I should copy the zip file into Install/Modules. Then it should show up in the list at the bottom for installable modules.
