We own a Cute Chat license that allows us to install it on as many DNN installs as we like on our server. This license cost us $799 (US) so it was not cheap.

We recently moved to another server as our original server was unreliable & obviously our IP address changed.

After the move to our new server was completed we emailed cutesoft to have our cutechat license reissued and got the following response from them.

Dear Customer,

Yes I see you have CuteChat v4 IP license for xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx purchased on Apr 2, 08. Change of IP in your case is $699. Would you like to proceed?

Basically they are trying to charge us $699 to reissue a license.

I really feel that cutechat are trying to rip us off & hold us to ransom as their is no mention of a cost to reissue your license & the other 6 or so companies that we have also contacted to reissue licenses did it promptly & at no cost.

Is it just me or are they trying to hold us to ransom?

did they provide this licence schema already, when you bought the module? Be aware that there are some other companies, providing their licenses on an annual rate only.

It is a lifetime license. Karen even said in her forums: "Your official license file sure works permanetly forever. " see: http://cutesoft.net/forums/thread/64338.aspx

Hi all,

Let's take a closer look at CuteSoft IP license definition to avoid confusion. 1 IP license locks to 1 IP@ and it's good for all the domains hosted on this IP@ permanently. If the license owner is not sure of the production IP at the time of purchase, we issue 1 3-month temp license to cover the transitional period. In some cases,, the grace period can be extended to 6 months. Then the license owner is required to register the IP@ to make their permanent license file. Once the permannet license file has been issued, there is no free IP change. We do have a fee schedule per product. Basically the longer the product has been running with the permannet license file, the more fee there is to change IP. Reason behind this is to pay off our developers' hard work who are the driving force behind product improvements.

All our product fees are one time charge, there is no montly/yearly fees of any sort. I listed our fee schedule on the bottom of this reply for your reference. As long as the IP@ stays unchanged, the registered IP license is good for ever. If you ever loss the binary license file, we re-issue the file free of charge upon request.

There are customers who don't have control over their IP@ and they can be forced to move server by their ISPs. For those customers, we highly recommend non-IP-related license options, ie Domain, Small Business... Enterprise license etc to protect themselves from IP change down the road.

In unfortunate situations where IP license owners have to change their IP@, please contact Karen@CuteSoft.net, we will look at your situation case by case. Don't forget,  we are a group of developers just like yourself. We don't want to choke anyone's business in this economy winter. On the other hand, there is always a cost issuing a new IP license. CuteSoft.net is a place developers help each other out. Again, we appreciate your business big or small. Drop us a line and we are always here to listen.

FYI, CuteChat/CuteWebMessenger fee schedule

A Domain license allows the product to run on 1 domain/subdomain name, ie http://news.domain.com or http://intranet or http://192.168.0.1

A Small Business License allows 10 such names

An IP license enables all the domains/subdomains hosted on this IP@ to use the control.

All license options are good for http://localhost free access

CuteChat and CuteWebMessenger are based on same set of software so install once and get both running. However the 2 of them are on different license files. Buying one license doesn't enable the other.

Hi Karen,

I am glad that you read my email pointing to this post so we can now get the facts out to the community so they can judge for themselves about the $699 cost to reissue a license for a change of IP address.

Can you please confirm a few things for me:

1. Did you tell us that it would cost us $699 to reissue our license for our IP address (as you know, this was not an upgrade request, just a license reissue).

2. Can you please show me where on your purchase page (http://cutesoft.net/ASP.NET+Chat/Purchase/) or your licensing info page (http://cutesoft.net/How+to+Buy/Licensing+Info/) it lists your charges for IP changes.

3. Can you confirm that to upgrade to the latest version of CuteChat is $399 (http://cutesoft.net/asp.net+chat/upgrade_to_Chat_version_5.aspx) but a license reissue for changing your IP is $699.

I really think that it is quite clear that you have tried to hold us ransom as we were already using your software & the majority of people would just pay the $699.

I would highly recommend that you be honest & list your fees for IP address changes on both your purchase page (http://cutesoft.net/ASP.NET+Chat/Purchase/) & your licensing info page (http://cutesoft.net/How+to+Buy/Licensing+Info/) so that before people purchase your product they are aware of these extra charges.
