Hello everyone,

Not sure this is the right place to post this, but I'm giving this a go.

Here is what I'm trying to do:

In a website of mine I have a certain folder which contains a bunch of images. I create a specific user role so that I can manage which users will have access to the folder. I want only this user role to be able to download these images. I want them to be able to download ONLY, not upload, not delete.

First thought is that I could do it from file manager: Give the permissions required to the user role and get this over with. But to be honest, I'm not sure it is the best way to do that. Is it safe? Is there perhaps some hole in the scenario? Also in file manager I do not have a preview of the image. How will the user know which image he wants to download? It is impossible to figure it out from the name file.

So I've been looking for a module that will be able to do what I described. Until now, all the modules I found in store, require me to upload the files again. I want to be able to use my already existing folder, not re-upload my images again and duplicate the size. Also, I can change nothing from the said folder because in there I keep all the images used in the eshop of the website, meaning I can't delete the folder and upload elsewhere the images.

Does anyone have an idea how I could approach this? Is there a module that can do the above because I haven't been able to find one?

Any suggestions are welcome!

Thank you!

Skoubri,

I would create a secure folder, that only a filehandler is able to receive the file. Otherwise it is possible to download the file by it's Url, e.g. /Portals/0/SecretImages/SomeImage.jpg. Then use a Links module to have links to the files in that folder automatically, e.g. https://github.com/DNNCommunity/DNN.L...

If you want image previews, you could use a Gallery Module (e.g. Simple Gallery by Ventrian, http://www.ventrian.com), but then you will propably lose the secure way from above, or create the thumbnails yourself (FastStone Image Resizer is helpful), upload them to a thumbnails folder and then use an HTML module to display the thumbnails and link them to the appropriate file in the secure folder. It should be also possible to realize that without the thumbnails, as DNN has an image handler included (see http://www.dnnsoftware.com/community-...).

It should also be quite easy to create a module that works a bit like the Links module but displays thumbnails of the images instead of text links. The DNN image handler should be also helpful to realize that.

Happy DNNing!

Hello Michael, thank you for the reply!
If I understand correctly, if I approach the matter from this point of view, wouldn't it require to move the images in another folder? Or create a new folder and put the images there as well? Or can I follow through this with the existing folder? That's the point I couldn't understand..
Thank you again for your time!

I would create a database view on the rows in vw_files view using appropriate folderID and use bbimagehandler (see http://bbimagehandler.codeplex.com/) to retrieve the file preview (you might even be able to use DNNimagehandler, included with DNN, which is a crippled copy of bbimagehandler, but I'd hesitate to rely on its features).

Hello Sebastian, thank you for the reply:)

This seems awfully close to what I'm trying to do. I'm gonna dig into bbimagehandler to get an overall idea how it works and try to use it in the way you described to see how it goes.
Thank you very much for the suggestion!
