I'm going to jump on the bandwagon here and also admit that I am late in adding my input. My apologizes. I simply did not have the time to test out the beta versions. And Alan, thank you the upgrade is very nice work and resolves previous issues nicely.

I too see the event details loading in the same window as the list view to be a very big design issue. robax is correct in that when placing the small calendar and list view on a page it is to make use of a small display space. Loading the event details in this space does indeed create page layout problems. It breaks the design and forces tables to grow in unpredictable ways. (It is an existing issue with DNN that the primary container table simply does not restrict the page size. Too many modules have hard-coded layouts that need to be removed.) I would prefer to have the details load into a new page.

In List View there is an option to have the Tooltip box display when rolling over an event. This is sufficent for in-page display. If a user clicks to view more, they are probably interested enough that they don't need the rest of the page content to remain on the page. For my users events like classes or training can have a page (many paragraphs) of additional info. The details need to load in another page or have an option to select inline view or detail page view.

It's pretty clear that this function was not purposefully removed and instead was lost because it wasn't fully recognised in the first place. Given the confused workflow and settings in the original module, it's not really that surprising.

However, the fact is... the ability to display a list of one calendar's events on a seperate page, in a useful and compact manner, has been lost. This has also broken the upgrade path for the module. I'd like to move the discussion in this thread towards either restoring the former functionality, or, as I had earlier suggested, providing an alternative.

  • To restore the earlier function, the module needs to regain the setting allowing event details to be displayed in an admin page.
  • To provide a good alternative, the module should aquire RSS functionality.

In my own view, I think RSS is the better option. The downside of RSS is that it still breaks the upgrade path, but for me personally I can live with it... and RSS is more flexible in the long run. What do others think?

Regards
Rob

I've just noticed that a new beta has been released and it has a fix listed that sounds like it might restore the lost functionality. Im going to test it out now and report back.

Ok.  I have posted a new Beta that allows the option to display the Detail Event form on the same page or in it's own page.  Check out the pinned post on this site and please...please...please test it well and report issues back on the pinned thread so that others might benefit (and we don't have to answer the same questions 50 times.

As far as the RSS feed, we are looking into it....also, the source is included w/3.3.7.  If others want to point us to source code that supports this feed (in a complex module), we will try to re-implement.  However, I believe that Events 3.0 supported the RSS feed as a by-product rather than an implicit code implementation.  This was because 3.0 had a rather simple approach and only had basically 2 forms (View and Edit) to implement.  The current Events module offers much more, when you consider SubCalendars, Notification, Enrollment, and more robust Recurrance support.  So, instead of zingers...someone get on the code bandwagon and point us to the source code to implement RSS implicitly.

OK.. this issue has been botherin me for a while too

my "EVENTS" page
holds the main EVENTS MODULE ina large "MONTH VIEW ONLY"

my front "HOME" page
holds  a second EVENTS MODULE, with a submodule setting that recieves its data from the main "EVENTS" page.

i use the separate second instance ONLY to display all the events from the main "EVENTS" module in "LIST VIEW" mode,
not to add or edit more events...

but when users click on any event listed on the "HOME" page...
it messes up my entire layout whenever it displays the event's description.

I WOULD LIKE FOR USERS TO CLICK ON AN EVENT TITLE
AND BE TAKEN TO THE MAIN "EVENTS" PAGE
INSTEAD OF OPENING IN THE SAME PAGE AND MESSING UP THE LAYOUT

i figured that if i add a url link to the "EVENTS" page on each event individualy, it would work.
but it becomes redundant when youre inside the main "EVENTS" page,
clicking on any event will re-direct you to the same page...like a loop

so how do i get a hold of this beta release please...
i'm pretty savy with dnn and my current project is for a gov site,

thanx,

Andy
