Alan,
Coming from here, all I can say is thanks for being an active project lead. I'm sure you know there are many projects with crickets chirping. Me, I'll take ANY kind of dialogue over silence (not that I'm inferring a negative on that). And what could be better than offering up source on the module. Need a feature? Code it and contribute. Or, take the source and branch off what you need.

I've had feedback from users of the latest release and they love it.

Eric, I guess the opposite could be true.  I too would suspect the module was not useful and not being used if no one commented.  I am grateful for the comments, it demonstrates an active communitiy and that others are reviewing and trying to use the module.  Often I see some opportunities to enhance/fix the module...however, I believe we've succeeded in providing basic event/calendaring functionality and a reference code sample that can be extended by others that need more.  BTW, we have had others offer extensions (and fixes) and incorporated several of these.

The 3.3.8 version is fairly stable (although it may have some minor issues) and has been submitted for release.  The source code will be available as soon as it passes our internal pacakaging/release qa.

I appreciate anyone taking up the banner to help in plan for future releases.  What are the priorities?  We can go in just about any direction that provides the most functionality for our community...  What are the use cases for the module?  What fixes/use cases we need to be addressed first (priorities)?  Some functions like iCalendar implementation may cause a re-write for the module...however would provide for major extensions and functionality!    So, lets hear from some that want to help define the module future and feature set...here's some ideas:

- review the latest 3.3.8 and define/prioritize issues that need to be addressed
- migrate the module to a full .NET 2.0 implementation.  For you coders or folks that want to extend the module, would you prefer a .NET WAP or WSP implementaion for the code?
- improved security model for the module...including event role management and delegation
- full support for the iCalendar implementation import/export.  This would support exchanging calendar information with most other web and desktop calendaring software, but may limit some of the extended features (ex. enrollment), since this is not supported by the iCalendar spec directly.
- better support for templating/skinning, if possible or general UI improvements.  How?  Specifics?

Remember whatever direction the community decides, the basic premise of DNN modules:  must support localization/cultures, work within the existing DNN framework, etc.  What would be cool is if someone might lead an effort to create a spec/use case document, get buy-in/consensus from the community, and submit it.  We are willing to do the work....  It's just that often we hear conflicting issues/requirements...this is were the community can help police its self and allow us to do what we do best...deliver high-quality software that meets the stated requirements!  Thanks again for your support!

Hi Alan,

I am using DNN version 4.4.1 and the latest events module (03.03.08 from your website released on the 5/22/2007). I have come across a problem when using the list view. Basically the list view does not seem to display old events when logged in as an admin, but the month view does. This can be a problem if the list view is set as the only view as you cannot edit the event. I know you can change the Selected Days, Selected Number of Events but this will show old events to all users, not just admins. Could the list view be changed in future to act like the month view (e.g. Show future events or the event filters in Events Settings to users, but show all events to admins)? Also, I think paging on the list view grid would be a great addition.

Thanks

The list view was intended to show mainly future dates.  One of the cool things you can do is have multiple instances of the Events module pointing to the same events!  So, you can setup the List View "only" instance to show future dates based on an existing "All Views" but admin only access...  So this should accomplish what you are intending to do...  As with other complex modules, there is always more than one way to accomplish the task.  We are trying to get some docs out on the module and ways to accomplish some of the things users want to do...

I've just uploaded the 03.03.08 to my DNN site and have found the following issues:

  • When Disable Month View Cell Events is checked and I click on the a date with an event (indicated by hyperlinked date) the result says I have no events on that day
  • An authenticated user (non-admin) account does not have the ability to change a module instance view from month to day to week. Your demo has links at the bottom of the view, but they don't appear in my installation.
  • Option 'Show Events on Next Month (or Prev Month) would be better as 'Show Dates of Next/Prev Month on Month View'
  • When changing the default module view an error occurs. I'll create a separate post on this.

Thanks for your work on this, its a great (and very much needed) core module.
