For some time I've been looking for a way to contribute back for all the help I've received from the DNN community. I don't know if this will actually be helpful, but here goes.

I've created a custom Events module (bizEvents) with some features I quite like. Perhaps others have already suggested these features so it will be nothing new. I've put up a hidden page you can use to check out the module:

http://www.bizport.org/EventsDemo/tabid/200/Default.aspx

You can try adding events if you like.

Here are some of the features:
  1. The left column shows "Featured Events", which is a parent calendar that would normally go on the Home page.
    • A "View Details" link expands in place the description of the event. I love this feature.
    • Optionally, the link can go to another page if the description is too long to be appropriate for expanding in place.
    • The width of the module can be set in pixels.
    • The Summary line is optionally displayed
  2. The "Events" module in the content column is where events are added.
    • It optionally shows a list of categories to filter search events.
    • When you add an event, you can choose whether to display it in a parent calendar, such as "Featured Events".
    • You can select the filter categories that apply to the event.
    • You indicate whether the event detail should expand in place or go to a new page.
  3. In Module Settings you can
    • Set the width of the module
    • Choose whether to allow events to be assigned to categories
    • Choose whether to allow filtering of events in the list view
    • Choose whether to display the optional summary line - nice for the abbreviated Featured Events view to give some but not all the detail
    • Choose whether to display the event detail or link to the detail
Let me know if any of this would be useful to your team. I'm happy to send code or help in some way.

Thanks,
Gary

Gary, I went to the site and it looks cool.  Do you have a view by Day, Week, and Month?  A lot of folks wand a more graphical way of seeing the data.  As a suggestion, instead of all the categories...DNN has implemented a Search Engine.  I have incorporated this into the new Calendar module.  This enables you to search/select by just about anything that is typed into the description of the event.
