I have upgraded two separate DNN installations on the same Windows 2008 / IIS7 server to DNN 5.6.1, and now the File Manager stalls and just shows the AJAX spinning wheel when I try to expand the "Portal Root" treeview node.  It doesn't appear to be related to folder permissions because I am still able to create folders and upload files using the File Manager.

It appears to be an AJAX communication problem.  In IE I debugged the JavaScript and got this error:

SCRIPT5022: Sys.ArgumentException: Cannot deserialize empty string.
Parameter name: data
ScriptResource.axd?d=_aqE9ksVAG4Tu-aPjOYvnyjRNTI-txSnt_DS92OBdx9KJQZENBc1RK4C43A7m8qZFqyRRZxPjkP3lV2js9WYxQFmJVlIHhliGbFi1zQN24LCfmXUYgVIyqW8-5LplfrW8loxvZC41GewIct-JMUoh1zZ7ZI1&t=ffffffffb0dd0720, line 5 character 85938

In Host --> Host Settings find the Advanced Settings, Performance Settings section and for the Compression Settings drop-down list set it to "No Compression". This is a known issue that appeared in DNN 5.6.1.

Thanks William. By the way, where's the best place to find known issues in the latest release of DNN?

Thank you for the solution, but I'm concerned that this hasn't been properly addressed. It also breaks the ACTIONS menu and makes the site impossible to manage without an alternate menu in place. I've put no less than 6 hours into debugging this and never made the connection. Ironically, it wasn't until I used the IE developer JS console to look at the JS error I've been seeing the entire time, THEN searched here, that I found a solution. Who uses IE to debug JS? I'm not a fan of FireFox, but firebug does seem to be the standard and Chrome seems to have quickly growing following, but IE?!

Anyhow, I'm going to go blog now so the rest of the DNN community might have an easier time finding a solution via Google instead of suffering until such a debilitating bug is fixed.
